Description
The buildings at the archeological site of Ephesus constitute a unique example of Roman urban housing. Wolfdietrich Ziesel, an Austrian engineer, designed a solution to conserve the fragile historic fragments in a way that rendered them accessible to specialists and visitors. A steel structure supports a modular membrane roof. The canopy is divided in a grid of 25m x 11m bays. In each bay the thin membrane is tautly held between triangular steel trusses by a network of bracing cables and compression bars. The PTFE coated glass fibre fabric is delicately translucent. The low weight of the overall roof structure (25kg/m2) reduces the number of supporting columns. [C. Slessor, "Housing history - Wolfdietrich Ziesel's enclosure for archaeological remains at Ephesus elegantly reconciles historic conservation with accessibilityfor visitors", ARCHIT REV, 208(1245), 2000, pp. 40-41]
Description of the environmental conditions
Fresh air circulates through the building's slatted sides and rises through openings in the roof, naturally ventilating the interior and creating a comfortable climate for the visitors. [C.
